General Meeting Minutes for 1960

A General Meeting of the British Mathematical Colloquium was held at Royal Holloway College at 8.15 p.m. on Thursday, 8th September 1960.

Professor W H McCrea was in the chair.

The Minutes of the General Meeting held at Cardiff on 17th September, 1959, were read and approved.

The Chairman welcomed the guest speakers, Professor B Echmann and Professor J. L. Synge.

The accounts of the Colloquium held at Cardiff were approved.

Arising from the minutes, it was reported that the Committee had decided
a) not to duplicate the proceedings of he Cardiff Colloquium.
b) to express appreciation of the work done by Reading, but not to recommend the duplication of the proceedings of future colloquia.

Professor A G Walker on behalf of the Council of the University of Liverpool invited the Colloquium to hold its next meeting at Liverpool in September 1961. The invitation was received with acclaim.

Dr G Higman and Professor K A Hirsch were unable to attend the Colloquium and had resigned from the Committee. Professor A G Walker and Professor W K Hayman were elected to the vacancies.

Dr B H Neumann proposed a vote of thanks to the organisers of the Colloquium. It was resolved that the Chairman should write to the Council of Royal Holloway College and to the Domestic Bursar expressing the appreciation of the Colloquium for the hospitality provided by the college.

Professor P G Hilton drew the attention of the Colloquium to the Conference to be held during Easter, 1961 on Sixth Form teaching in relation to University requirements. It was proposed that the Colloquium approve the aims of the Conference and would give all possible support. The proposal was carried.

Mr D G Kendall drew the attention of the Colloquium to the Colloquium on Functional Analysis organized by the London Mathematical Society for Easter 1961.
