Biography

Andrzej Sołtysiak's father was a military officer, and consequently, his family moved frequently. Andrzej completed his elementary education in Wrocław, where he also enrolled in high school, but he took his final exams in Koszalin in 1968.

He graduated with a degree in mathematics in 1973 from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, where he began working the same year. In 1974, he began his PhD studies. His scientific supervisor was originally Professor Andrzej Alexiewicz (19171995), a former PhD student of professor Orlicz in Lwów.

By his own decision, Sołtysiak commuted regularly to Warsaw to the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences to attend seminars by Professor Wiesław Żelazko, who later became his scientific supervisor. In 1977, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on functional analysis. His thesis was entitled On Algebraic and Quasi-Algebraic Elements, and Capacity of Joint Spectra in Banach Algebras.

In 1989, he received his postdoctoral degree for his thesis On Algebraic and Quasi-Algebraic Elements, and Capacity of Joint Spectra in Banach Algebras. Sołtysiak became an associate professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of AMU in Poznań in 1996. He has been a member of the Polish Mathematical Society since 1981.

He now works in the Department of Mathematical Analysis (he was the head of this Department from 20142019). Sołtysiak was the supervisor of 45 master's theses and two doctoral theses (of Michał Jasiczak, 2004, and Maciej Łuczak, 2006). Additionally, he led the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Koszalin's Postgraduate Mathematics for Teachers Program. He specialises in functional analysis (Banach algebra, algebraic topology, spectral theory, especially of linear operators on Banach spaces). He has written or co-written 36 papers. Furthermore, he has published in well-known journals such as 'Studia Mathematica,' 'Colloquium Mathematicum,' 'Proceedings of the AMS,' 'Mathematical Analysis and its Applications,' and others.

He is the author of outstanding textbooks: Mathematical Analysis, Linear Algebra, and Introduction to Spectral Theory. As a co-organiser of two major international conferences, he became the co-editor of two volumes in the Banach Centre Publications series.

In 2015 he received the Medal of the National Education Commission for his scientific and educational work. His interest in functional analysis as a field of study emerged from Professor Wiesław Żelazko's seminar at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
