Mathematicians Of The Day

17th August

On this day in 1655, William Oughtred wrote to John Wallis to praise his methods in Arithmetica Infinitorum. It was received too late to be included in the first edition, but was included in the 1695 second edition.

On this day in 2011 Google released a Fermat doodle.

Quotation of the day

From Shizuo Kakutani
A drunk man will find his way home, but a drunk bird may get lost forever.
[A 2-dimensional random walk is recurrent whereas in higher dimensions random walks are not.]
