The Catalan Society for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
Founded in 1931
The Institute of Catalan Studies (Institut d'Estudis Catalans) was founded in 1907. The Catalan Society for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics was founded in 1931 within the Science Section of the Institute of Catalan Studies. Initially there were three branches the Society: Physics and Chemistry; Mathematics and Engineering; and Astronomy, Meteorology and Geophysics.
In 1968 there was a restructuring of the Catalan Society for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The Astronomy, Meteorology and Geophysics branch was closed, while the Physics and Chemistry branch was split into two separate branches. At this stage there were therefore still three branches: Physics; Chemistry; and Mathematics and Engineering. In 1973, however, the Mathematics and Engineering was split into two, making now four branches with Mathematics as one of these.
During the 1970s and early 1980s the Mathematics branch of the Catalan Society for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics expanded rapidly, both in terms of its membership and also in terms of its activities. This led to the creation of a new mathematical society, the Catalan Mathematical Society in 1986.
