The Society of Mathematicians and Physicists of Montenegro
Founded in 2006
The Society of Mathematicians and Physicists of Montenegro was founded in December 2006. The date of 2006 is highly significant in the history of Montenegro which lets us understand why the Society was founded at that time. Montenegro had been the Kingdom of Montenegro from 1910 to 1918 and it became part of Yugoslavia when it was created following World War I. In fact, Montenegro became a constituent republic of Yugoslavia. The Yugoslav Mathematical Society was formed in Belgrade in 1937 and this served mathematicians in Yugoslavia until the break-up of that country. This was a complicated event and this is not the place to give details. Many parts of Yugoslavia declared independence in 1991-92 but Montenegro remained a part of Serbia and Montenegro. The Society of Mathematicians and Physicists of Serbia had been founded on 4 January 1948 and it had split into two societies, mathematics and physics, in 1981 and at that time the Mathematical Society of Serbia was founded. Montenegro declared independence from Serbia in May 2006 and this prompted the move to found the Society of Mathematicians and Physicists of Montenegro a few months later. The first President of the Society was Milojica Jacmovic. Let is give some details of his career.
Milojica Jacimovic was born in Kostenica, a village in the Bijelo Polje Municipality in northern Montenegro, on 1 March 1950. He attended elementary school in Bistrica, near Bijelo Polje, and then secondary school in Belgrade. He graduate with a mathematics degree from the University of Belgrade in 1973 and was appointed as an assistant at the University of Montenegro in Podgorica in November of that year. He also undertook postgraduate studies in the theory of optimisation advised by Slobodan Dajovic. He was awarded his doctorate in 1980 by the University of Belgrade for his thesis Iterative regularisation of a minimisation method. He was promoted to assistant professor at the University of Montenegro in 1980, associate professor in 1986 and full professor in 1991. He made frequent visits to the Faculty of Numerical Mathematics and Cybernetics at Moscow State University as well as making a research visit to the University of Karlsruhe. His work is mainly in the area of operations research, mathematical programming, calculus of variations and optimal control.
The Society of Mathematicians and Physicists of Montenegro was officially registered as a non-governmental organisation of Montenegro. It has a Section for teaching of mathematics, physics and programming, a Section for young mathematicians, physicists and programmers, and a Section for scientific research. In July 2008 the Society of Mathematicians and Physicists of Montenegro became a member of European Mathematical Society. In July 2010 it applied for membership of the International Mathematical Union and it was admitted as a member on 1 September 2010. In the Society's application for membership, they presented the following information about mathematical education and research in Montenegro:

(i) There are three universities in Montenegro where the mathematics is taught: the University of Montenegro (Podgorica), the Mediterranean University (Podgorica), and the University of Donja Gorica.
(ii) The main research activities in mathematics are based in the University of Montenegro.
(iii) There is one Society of Mathematicians in Montenegro acting as a part of the Society of Mathematicians and Physicists of Montenegro.
(iv) There are about 30 professors in mathematics, about 10 young mathematicians on doctoral studies and about 500 mathematics teachers in secondary schools; formally, they are all members of the Society.
(v) In Montenegro there are about 30 active researchers in the areas of Analysis (the main research area), Topology, Probability, Optimization, Discrete mathematics, and Algebra. In recent years some of their results were published in highly ranked mathematical journals: Commentari Mathematici Helvetici, Transaction of the American Mathematical Society, Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications, Nonlinear Analysis, Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Physics, Annales of Academie Scientiarium Fennicae Mathematica, and Differential Equations.
(vi) In recent years mathematicians living in Montenegro published 5-8 papers in respected mathematical journals and about 10-15 in other mathematical journals.
(vii) Mathematical journals published in Montenegro are: (1) Mathematica Montisnigri and (2) Proceedings of the Section of Natural Sciences of the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts.
The Society's submission indicated the role that mathematicians from Montenegro had played in Yugoslavia wide society and later in the Serbia and Montenegro society. In the quote below we have made some changes to the wording given in [1]:-

Our Society was earlier a very active member of the Society of Mathematicians and Physicists of Yugoslavia, and after that of the Society of Serbia and Montenegro. Some of the activities performed by our Society are as follows: the Society organised the Congress of Mathematicians, Physicists and Astronomers of Yugoslavia in Becici, Montenegro; it also twice organised, in 1995 and 2004, the Congress of Mathematicians and Physicists of Serbia and Montenegro in Petrovac, Montenegro. The Society also organised, on several occasions, state competitions in mathematics and physics for the pupils of elementary and secondary schools in former Yugoslavia and later in Serbia and Montenegro. Up until 2006, the Society, jointly with Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the University of Montenegro, was responsible for the organisation of the competition for the pupils of elementary and secondary schools in Montenegro at all levels.The submission also indicated some activities of the Society after 2006 [1]:-
In the last two years the Society also organised the participation of the young mathematicians and physicists from Montenegro in Balkan Olympiads and International mathematical Olympiads.Now it was stated above that the journal Mathematica Montisnigri was published in Montenegro. In fact it is published jointly by the Society of Mathematicians and Physicists of Montenegro and the Department of Mathematics of the University of Montenegro. The first issue of the journal was in 1993. The webpage of the journal Mathematica Montisnigri has the following information:-
The journal 'Mathematica Montisnigri' publishes original scientific works from all fields of mathematics and mathematical modelling which comprise new and significant results with complete proofs, which are of interest for a larger mathematical community. It also contains expository articles. The journal does not publish works of polemical or methodological interest, as well as works that have been offered for publishing in other journals. The journal publishes papers in English, Russian, French and German. It is usually issued thrice a year.
