Herbert Westren Turnbull

Herbert Turnbull graduated from Cambridge and then taught at Cambridge, Liverpool and Hong Kong. After a period as a schoolteacher in England and as a Schools Inspector he went to Oxford before being appointed Regius Professor of Mathematics at St Andrews. He held this post for nearly 30 years. He was interested in Invariant Theory and in the History of Mathematics. He became President of the EMS in 1933 and 1950 and an honorary member in 1954. | |||||||||||||||||
